The DVSA research shows on average people need 45hrs practice with a driving instructor and 20hrs private practice as a national average.  This varies widely and it is important to go at your own pace. 


You will need a provisional license to be covered by your driving instructors insurance policy. If practicing with friends or family you will need to take out an insurance policy for their car. 


No, in fact most people find the driving theory makes more sense while taking practical lessons. However, you need to pass the theory test before you can book a practical test.
